Australian immigration reaches the highest level in 2018

With 832,560 permanent immigrants, Australian immigration reaches the highest level in 2018. The pace of the Australian population growth is at 1.6%. It has the highest population growth rate in the developed world. In fact, the growth rate is double that of the US and the UK.

The ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) had forecasted that Australia’s population would not reach between 23 and 25 million until 2051. However, Australia crossed the 25 million benchmark in August last year.

As per ABS figures, 832,560 permanent immigrants called Australia home in 2018. There was a 7.1% increase in the numbers as compared to 2017. 2017 had a record immigration intake of 539,000 permanent migrants. The net migration of Australia at 291,250 has been the highest in the last 4.5 years.

As per the latest data released by ABS, there were 1.5 million temporary residents in Australia in 2016. Nearly half of them were living in Sydney(27%). Melbourne accounted for 24% and Brisbane accounted for 14%.

The new figures have been released by ABS just months after PM Scott Morrison’s announcement about cutting down the immigration intake. He also proposed a population plan to better manage the population growth in Australia, as per SBS News. However, he also pointed out that population growth had always played an important role in Australia’s economic success.
